Governing Thought Critic: Prison Reformism in Discipline and Punish

Abstract

The article proposes a reading of the book Discipline and Punish based on the perspective of the reformism as a form of government. To do so, we highlight the Discipline and Punish writings and the courses published after the book, to establish the need for an analysis of the strategic dimension in the thought of Michel Foucault. Finally, we try to discuss what would be the approach of a counter-criticism of utopian liberalism reformism.

É doutor e mestre pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Sociologia (PPGS) da Universidade de São Paulo (USP, Brasil), possui graduação em ciências sociais pela USP e em jornalismo pela Faculdade Cásper Líbero (FCL, São Paulo, Brasil).

Professor do Departamento de Sociologia e Metodologia em Ciências Sociais (GSO) da Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF, Niterói, Brasil), do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Sociologia (PPGS) da UFF e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Sociologia e Direito (PPGSD) da UFF. É pesquisador do Núcleo de Estudos de Cidadania, Conflito e Violência Urbana (Necvu) da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ, Brasil), do Grupo Cidade e Trabalho do Laboratório de Pesquisas Sociais (Laps) da USP e do Núcleo de Pesquisas em Economia e Cultura (NuCEC) da UFRJ. Possui doutorado e mestrado pelo PPGS da USP e graduação em ciências sociais pela USP.
