In the School Yard: Interaction, Bullying, and the Emotional Grammars of Victimization
Keywords:
bullying, emotion, interaction, school violence, victimizationAbstract
The article analyses emotional grammars elicited by victimization in bullying episodes. Its theoretical approach draws on symbolic interactionism, with emphasis on the relation between emotions and individual compliance with social norms. The data consists in eleven in-depth interviews conducted with young people graduated from high school in Rio de Janeiro. The analysis revealed the existence of an emotional complex composed of anger, shame and sympathy, which is compared to emotional grammars found in victimization experiences in other forms of violence, such as burglaries and kidnappings, suggesting the existence of an emotional grammar of victimizationDownloads
