From Cachuela Esperanza to Guajará-Mirim: Resources, Scales and Transformations

Abstract

The paper presents some traits of drug trafficking in the city of Guajará-Mirim (Rondônia) in relation to the circuits that cross the Mamoré River and the people involved in wholesale circuits. In order to understand the scale and organization of these circuits, a historical contextualization of Guajará-Mirim was carried out so that it could be articulated with longer-time histories about the exploration of other natural resources of the region. Such stories raise relevant questions to analyze the operation of illegal markets across international boundaries

Professor do Departamento de Antropologia Cultural (DAC) e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Sociologia e Antropologia (PPGSA), ambos da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ, Brasil). É um dos coordenadores do Núcleo de Pesquisas em Cultura e Economia (NuCEC) da UFRJ. Possui doutorado pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Antropologia Social (PPGAS) da UFRJ, mestrado em migrações internacionais e relações étnicas pela Universidade de Estocolmo (Suécia) e graduação em ciências antropológicas pela Universidade de Buenos Aires (UBA, Argentina).
