Abstract

The article explores the representations of the police based on a symbolic interactionist approach, specifically the notions of representation in Erving Goffman, translated to the context of police organizations by Peter Manning. The general idea is that much like face-to-face interactions between social actors, organizations attempt to perform to the public a positive and coherent image. As study case we  analyze the mechanisms underpinning the projection of the official image of the Military Police of Pernambuco, Brazil. The research includes the analysis of the organizational social media, the Facebook fanpage, complemented by semi-structured interviews with members of the communication department of the Military Police.
