Erasures, Noises and Tensions in the Public Space in Brazil: Where is the Brazilian Street Art?

Abstract

The paper describes the relational dynamics of street art from the standpoint of memorable artists and their trajectories in two Brazilian cities, São Paulo and Fortaleza. If there are specificities in the way street artists performer in these two cities, there are also many things in common, such as the constitution of singular forms of occupation of urban space and of political memory. When presenting the specificities of street arts and their conflicts in these two Brazilian cities, we also attempt to situate them in the country’s current political context, showing how the state acts both to capture and to repress these interventions.

Professora titular da Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC, Fortaleza, Brasil) e docente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Sociologia (PPGS), da mesma universidade. É coordenadora geral do Grupo de Pesquisa do Laboratório das Juventudes (Lajus), da UFC, e membro fundadora da Rede Luso-Brasileira de Pesquisadores em Artes e Intervenções Urbanas (R.A.I.U.). Integra ainda a Rede Lusófona Todas as Artes, Todos os Nomes e a REAJ - Rede de Estudos sobre Experiências e Ações Juvenis. É doutora e mestre pelo PPGS/UFC e licenciada em ciências sociais pela mesma universidade.

Alexandre Barbosa Pereira, Universidade Federal de São Paulo

Professor do Departamento de Ciências Sociais e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Sociais (PPGCS), da Universidade Federal de São Paulo (Unifesp, Guarulhos, Brasil). É pesquisador associado do Laboratório do Núcleo de Antropologia Urbana (NAU) da Universidade de São Paulo (USP, Brasil) e do Grupo de Pesquisas Visuais e Urbanas (Visurb) da Unifesp. Membro fundador da Rede de Estudos Sobre Experiências e Ações Juvenis (Reaj). Tem doutorado e mestrado pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Antropologia Social (PPGAS) da USP e tem graduação em ciências sociais pela mesma universidade.
