The West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Frontier of Urban Studies?

Abstract

This paper intends to build a methodological approach for socio-anthropological studies about the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. The paper departs from two native categories framing the urban sociability in the West Zone: tranquility and progress. Exploring their multiple social meanings, the authors trace the differences and convergences with other temporalities and spacialities found in Rio de Janeiro. In this sense, the paper revisits the scholarship dedicated to understanding urban dynamics in the West Zone and organize them in two main research fields: one over politics and violence; and the other over the production of the city. Finally, we propose a research question: the analysis of the West Zone as an urban frontier.

Professora do Departamento de Sociologia (DS) da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ, Brasil). Tem doutorado pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Sociologia do Instituto de Estudos Sociais e Políticos (Iesp) da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (Uerj, Brasil), mestrado pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Sociologia e Antropologia (PPGSA) da UFRJ e graduação em ciências sociais pela Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil). É coordenadora do Urbano – Laboratório de Estudos da Cidade da UFRJ.

Doutor pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Antropologia Social (PPGAS) do Museu Nacional da UFRJ, mestre em etnologia e antropologia social pela École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS, Paris, França) e graduado em ciências sociais pela Universidade de Paris X (Paris X, França). É pós-doutorando na Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp, Brasil).
