This article analyzes the relationships between teenagers interned in the socio-educative Brazilian system and criminal groups known as ‘factions.’ As a methodological strategy, group discussions and open-ended interviews were held with teenagers in two socio-educative centers. To understand such relationships, we propose three ideal types of attachment between teenagers and factions: discursive, territorial, and effective. From this, we discuss the symbolic and material roles that factions play for teenagers in contexts of deprivation of freedom.Downloads
