The End of the “Essential Black Subject”? Notes from Stuart Hall In the face of multiculturalism and ethnic essentialisms that confuse race and culture, Stuart Hall's reflections are particularly relevant today in rejecting the idea of a fixed black subject. Drawing on his diasporic experience between Jamaica and England, Hall shows how racialization and black identity are contextually articulated. The article revisits his formulations on subject, subjectivity, and diaspora, highlighting his contribution to thinking about identity politics without resorting to essences.
