During the last decades, the so called “lack of safety”, which alludes to a rise in criminal activities, grew consistently as a problematic social issue. The presence of “organized crime” and the “fight to control certain territories” were the main explanatory resources put forward to understand these phenomena, although frequently without enough empirical support. This paper, written from an ethnographic perspective, analyzes the practices of the social actors that became involved in a violent conflict in a poor neighborhood of the city of Buenos Aires. At the same time, it analyzes the way in which the inhabitants of these neighborhoods solve their own social conflicts and the relations they establish with state security forces and corps.
