Alda Lara was a writer much of whose short life was lived – quite literally – in transit, dividing her time between Portugal, where she went to study, and Angola, the homeland to which she wished to return. In this article the aim is explore how her experiences in and between these two spaces helped Alda Lara build her poetic world. The structure and organization of her only book of poetry, published posthumously, will be examined with a view to indicating how Africa enters in to her poems as a counterpoint to the themes that her experience in Portugal inspired.
