Under arrest, Ngungunhana, Gaza Emperor (c.1850-1906), was taken with his entourage to Lisbon (1896) and afterwards to the Azores. In 1985, a funeral box with his remains arrived in Maputo for resounding posthumous tribute. The study of the exile/return, described in “Os Ossos de Ngungunhana” (2004), by Marcelo Panguana, will be accomplished according to the theories of diaspora (Hall), of the Negro diaspora (Gilroy) and of the cultural identity (Hall).
