This paper analyses the representation of Maputo urban life such as depicted in Lília Momplé's Neighbours. My purpose is to show that the city means different things to each character. Acting as a narrative scenery of internal conflicts and differences in postcolonial Mozambican society, the city also displays the dynamics of circulation and integration of subjects and identities in the “inter- regional” space of the Indian Ocean.
