We aim at reflecting on the dialectics between country and city as ways through which human groups organize themselves and as indexes of the history and literature of Brazil and Mozambique, countries inserted in a specific linguistic system, so as to investigate the cultural resemblances and differences between them. For this purpose, this paper will analyze comparatively the following short stories: "A enxada", written by the Brazilian author Bernardo Elis, and “A avó, a cidade e o semáforo”, by the Mozambican author Mia Couto.
