Abstract

MICROBIOLOGICAL REGULATION OF THE NITROGEN AVAILABILITY IN FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS. Freshwater ecosystems are important for the nitrogen global cycling. In these environments, large amounts of nitrogen are fixed to become bioavailable, and are also emitted into the atmosphere as gas molecules. The regulation of nitrogen availability in aquatic ecosystems occurs mainly through microbial processes and is extremely important for maintaining the dynamics and functioning of ecosystems. This review gathers information about the main ways of nitrogen transformation in freshwater ecosystems, evaluating the importance of each one to nitrogen bioavailability regulation in these biological systems.

Keywords: Nitrogen; nutrient cycling; bioavailability; freshwater ecosystems; inland waters.
