Journal History

Founded in 1934, the Revista Brasileira de Música was the first academic-scientific music journal in Brazil. The idea of a scientific journal dedicated to music arose naturally from the incorporation of what was then the Instituto Nacional de Música into the structure of Brazil’s first public university, the University of Rio de Janeiro, created on September 7, 1920. Without losing its historic role as a center for the training of musicians, from that point onward, the Instituto Nacional de Música opened up space for new areas of musical knowledge, especially after the end of the Old Republic and the modernizing transformations stemming from the new political order established in Brazil with the so-called Revolution of 1930.

Decree no. 19,852, dated April 11, 1931, issued by Minister Francisco Campos, established the reform of university education. At the Instituto Nacional de Música, a curriculum reform was devised by a committee composed of Luciano Gallet, Sá Pereira, and Mário de Andrade. Among the numerous proposals was the introduction of new subjects such as History of Music and National Folklore. Thus, the foundations were laid for the creation of the Revista Brasileira de Música. The first issue was published in March 1934 by a committee composed of Guilherme Fontainha, Lorenzo Fernandez, Luiz Moretzsohn, and Luiz Heitor Correa de Azevedo. In his introductory remarks for the volume, Fontainha (then Director of the Institute) explained how “the INM lacked a publication outlet where students could follow every step of musical progress.” Among the contributors to this first issue were Ayres de Andrade, Francisco Mignone, Sá Pereira, and Mário de Andrade.

Published without interruption until 1945, the Revista Brasileira de Música released twenty-five issues in ten volumes during this initial phase. Its publication was resumed only in 1980, when the first graduate program in music in Brazil was created at the UFRJ School of Music. In this second phase, however, its regularity depended on the interest of the individual who, by regulation, served as the journal’s editor—namely, the Director of the School of Music. The last issue of this phase was published in 2002, during João Guilherme Ripper’s administration. By decision of the School’s Administration and its Congregation, in 2010 the Revista Brasileira de Música was placed under the responsibility of the Graduate Program in Music.

From 2010 to 2019, the journal was overseen by Editor-in-Chief Maria Alice Volpe. As of 2020, it has adopted a format including thematic dossiers linked to the Research Groups of the Graduate Program in Music, under the editorship of Professors João Vicente Vidal and Pauxy Gentil-Nunes, the program’s coordinators. Beginning in 2024, Professor Fábio Adour will assume the role of Editor-in-Chief, succeeding Professor Pauxy.
