Abstract

Coastal craft fishers possess a wealth of local knowledge that serves as a primary tool for pursuing livelihoods. However, few studies have been made of this kind of knowledge. The objective of this article is to present and discuss the ethno-ecological knowledge of craft fishers who operate along the coast of Goiana municipality (Pernambuco State) highlighting the relevance of this knowledge for understanding the dynamics of the local natural environment. Qualitative research was based on semi-structured interviews undertaken in field work. Data obtained encompassed local knowledge concerning fishing resources, river-marine dynamics and geomorphological, ecosystemic and atmospheric relationships which display great potential for local environmental and territorial management.
