This article analyzes the relationship between environmental inspection and deforestation in the Legal Amazon, using as a framework the creation of the Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Legal Amazon, instituted in 2004. The methodology looked at infraction notices, which represent crimes against the flora, issued by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Natural and Renewable Resources. The outcome variable corresponds to the annual increase in deforestation taken from the National Institute for Space Research, incorporating some explanatory variables
that may be associated with deforestation, from 2004 to 2019. Thus, there is a positive relationship between the annual deforestation increase and the fines imposed. On the other hand, the value of the infractions negatively influences the increase in deforestation, indicating that a 1% increase in the value of the fines imposed reduces the annual increase in deforestation by around 4.81%.
