This article proposes a return to an understanding of deities and ancestors as inspirations and provocations of thought. In particular, it highlights the Yoruba deity Olokun as a conceptual point of contact between death, time, the desire for wealth and obsession. The mythological richness of the Ifá oral literature serves as material for a first step in exploring these themes.
