Abstract

In the last years of his life, Derrida (1930-2004) dedicated himself to thinking about forgiveness. He followed the debates around the uses and abuses of forgiveness as a path to reconciliation, in a context in which he harshly criticized the institutionalization of forgiveness in South Africa. This paper proposes thinking about the usefulness of non-pure (conditional) forgiveness, a problem that involves questioning forgiveness when it comes to crimes against humanity in terms of forgiving the unforgivable and the limits of transposing forgiveness into the public sphere. Would something similar to forgiveness be possible for social and political relations?
