The article aims to discuss and highlight the centrality of linguistic usage contexts from the functional-constructional perspective, within the framework of Usage-Based Linguistics, as advocated by Rosário and Oliveira (2016) and Furtado da Cunha, Bispo and Silva (2013). We argue that, despite the incorporation of more formalist assumptions, arising from the consideration of grammatical construction as the basic unit of language, and the recognition that language is a network of interconnected constructions at different levels, as advocated by Traugott and Trousdale (2013) and Hilpert (2014), linguistic usage remains the starting point for investigation in this area. After highlighting the centrality of usage contexts in the classic version of Functionalism and in Usage-Based Linguistics, we present a case study based on Rosa (2021), focusing on instantiations of the locative correlation schema encoded as [X1(Prep/Conj)Loc1, X2(Prep/Conj)Loc2], demonstrating that only through qualitative methodology, with a focus on the careful analysis of Portuguese expressions, is it possible to arrive at the fixation of said schema.
