North American Functional Linguistics and Construction Grammar: Open Dialogues

Abstract

Bringing theoretical perspectives together is very common and often welcome in the investigation of linguistic phenomena. With this in mind, we discuss here points of convergence between North American Functional Linguistics and Construction Grammar in terms of theoretical postulates and methodological procedures. The combination of these two models has been very productive for analyzing phenomena in Brazilian Portuguese. We reflect on the challenges faced in this combination, also in theoretical and methodological terms, and with regard to the identity of the researcher, whether functionalist or constructionist. We also consider open questions in this interface, highlighting the paths to be taken. Finally, we present the papers that make up this dossier, briefly explaining the content of each one.

Professor Associado do Departamento de Letras da UFRN e docente permanente do Programa de Pós-graduação em Estudos da Linguagem (PPgEL) na mesma universidade. Coordenou o PPgEL/UFRN nos biênios 2015-2017 e 2017-2019 e o GT Descrição do Português da Associação Nacional de Pós-graduação e Pesquisa em Letras e Linguística (ANPOLL), biênio 2016-2018. Líder do Grupo de Estudos Discurso & Gramática/UFRN. Editor-chefe da Revista do GELNE. Bolsista de Produtividade em Pesquisa do CNPq.

Maria Angélica Furtado da Cunha, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN)

É professora Titular de Linguística da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte e Professora Visitante da Universidade Federal Fluminense. Tem doutorado em Linguística pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro e mestrado em Linguística pela Universidade de Brasília. Realizou dois estágios de pós-doutoramento na University of California, Santa Barbara, e um na Universidade Federal Fluminense. Membro do grupo de estudos Discurso & Gramática. Coorganizadora de livros e autora de vários capítulos e artigos sobre transitividade, estrutura argumental, gramática de construções e ensino de gramática sob o enfoque da Linguística Funcional. Bolsista de Produtividade em Pesquisa do CNPq.

Professor Adjunto de Linguística e Língua Portuguesa da Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (UFERSA). Doutor em Estudos da Linguagem pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). Membro do Grupo de Estudos Discurso & Gramática (UFRN) e líder do Grupo de Estudos Língua em Uso (UFERSA). Editor-chefe adjunto da Revista do GELNE.
