This article aims to list some assumptions about the relationship between the concepts of text, context and reading explored by Pauliukonis (2013; 2016; 2017, among others) in her scientific trajectory, not only in order to highlight her concern with the teaching of Portuguese language in basic education - more specifically, with text interpretation strategies in the training of language users - but also to highlight the productive interface between Text Linguistics (Antunes, 2003; Azeredo, 2018; Koch and Elias, 2018; Cavalcante, 2022; Coelho, 2023 and others) and Semiolinguistic Discourse Analysis Theory (Charaudeau, 2008; 2019; Feres, 2021 and others) in the research carried out by the linguist. Based on Pauliukonis' assumptions, the referencing process (Mondada and Dubois, 2003) triggered in and by the multimodality (Kress, 2010) constitutive of texts will be problematized in the reading of Instagram posts centered on cartoons by Miguel Paiva. By means of qualitative analysis, it is possible to perceive the construction of discourse objects in the pieces through verb-visual semiosis, with the images having significant discursive power just like the verbal sign.
