Discipline and Punish and Prison Studies in Brazil
Keywords:
Foucault, prison, prison studies, social sciences, democratizationAbstract
The article presents the work 'Discipline and Punish' of Michel Foucault in prison studies in Brazil. It discusses the social, political and academic context in which the work came to Brazil and how it was incorporated into prison studies, especially in the field of social sciences, since the 1970s and during the democratization. The main argument of the article is that, in this period, the work was widely used by scholars as a reference, rather than as a theoretical and methodological inspiration for the social sciences researches.
