The Control of the Sentence: Prisoners, Defenders and Processes in the Circuits of the Justice System

Abstract

By ethnographically exploring the relationships established between prisoners and their judicial processes, as well as the day-to-day activities of a public defender in a penal court, the article seeks to question a widely disseminated figuration about Brazilian prisons: that they would be under the control of the prisoners. Other figurations of the exercise of state control over prisons emerge through a closer examination of the documentary techniques that structure both the judicial procedures of punishment and the experience of incarceration.

Pós-doutorando do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Sociologia (PPGS) da Universidade de São Paulo (USP, Brasil). Possui doutorado e mestrado pelo mesmo programa. Fez especialização em investigação etnográfica, teoria antropológica e relações interculturais na Universidade Autônoma de Barcelona (UAB, Espanha). É graduado e licenciado em ciências sociais pela USP.
