The Idea of Everyday Life in Luiz Antonio Machado da Silva’s Sociology of Violence Crime

Abstract

The article discusses this author’s analyses of crime and urban sociability. Reviewing Machado da Silva’s papers and book chapters on the subject, the text highlights how both the methodological turn towards everyday life and the theoretical reframing of the domination question support the innovative sociological interpretation the sociologist provides about urban violence in Brazil. The paper stresses that this analytical approach follows Machado da Silva’s previous research on urban lower classes’ daily lives.

Professora do Departamento de Sociologia da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ, Brasil) e uma das coordenadoras do Urbano: Laboratório de Estudos da Cidade, da UFRJ. Integra também o Núcleo de Pesquisas em Cultura e Economia (NuCEC), também da UFRJ, e o Grupo Casa: Estudos Sociais sobre Moradia e Cidade, do Instituto de Estudos Sociais e Políticos (Iesp), da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (Uerj, Brasil). É doutora pelo Iesp/Uerj, mestre pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Sociologia e Antropologia (PPGSA), da UFRJ, e graduada em ciências sociais pela Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil).
