Abstract

The everyday life security against mobile phone theft. This study analyzes the everyday security by mobile phone users against the theft of those devices in Salvador, Brazil. It is based on data from semi-structured interviews. It examines the characteristics of the concrete, pragmatic, and inventive measures taken by subjects to manage threats and dangers related to the robberies. It points to the fact that most of those individual and collective measures aim at situational prevention by avoiding behaviors perceived as risky. It shows that these preventive measures are characterized by recurring concealment of the targets in the realm of spaces, times, and activities. It asserts that these measures, as well as collective procedures of communication, contribute to create zones of use and exclusion of the use of mobile phones. It concludes that these responses should be complemented with multiple additional security measures.
