The aim of the paper Who Are the Crackheads? Notes for the Anthropological Study of a ‘Social Problem' is to contribute to our understanding of crack consumption in Rio de Janeiro. To this end, I ask the question: “Who are the crackheads?” This category designates a member of the class of people which initially corresponded to crack consumers, but has gained broader semantic implications. I seek, as a starting point in such representations, to compare them to the reports and experiences of some users of this drug with whom I established a dialogue. Thus I hope to contribute toward studies aimed at understanding acts of consumption and sociability deemed as “social problems” in the large Brazilian urban centers and their outskirts.
