O presente artigo tem por objetivo analisar a representação da árvore nos contos de Mia Couto. Importante e sagrada nas culturas africanas, a árvore é trabalhada literariamente pelo autor sob nuances diversas, mas complementares. Guardiã da tradição, nela se encontram os ancestrais, que aconselham, mas, se necessário, também podem punir. A relação íntima e amalgamada com seus naturais, a condição feminina de fertilidade, acolhimento, força e delicadeza são algumas dessas nuances. Símbolo da terra natal, a árvore, antiquíssima, testemunha a história e outras estórias, amores que brotam e prendem, de boa vontade, o homem ao solo, e outros que acabam por afastá-los.
