This text analyses the literary representation of the city in some of Ruy Duarte de Carvalho's works, more specifically Os papéis do inglês (2007) and A terceira metade (2009). Its main purpose is to approximate data extracted from their author's experience, the inferences related to the historical dynamics of Austral Africa, and the role of the cities -- from the colonial metropoles of the past to the small communities of our time -- in the construction of his novels.
