Abstract

This article aims to reflect on the image of ruin in two contemporary artistic works from Mozambique, both in the fields of literature and cinema. Based on the poetry of the writer Guita Jr. and the film Fin (2018), by filmmaker Lara Sousa, we seek to analyze how the image of ruin appears in the works of both authors, both through poetic images and cinematic images. For this analysis, we draw on researcher Martha Alkmim’s rereading of Walter Benjamin’s concept of ruin, for whom contemplating ruins involves a gaze traversed by historical past, present, memories, gaps, and, above all, a future to be imagined. Taking these intersections into account, we propose an inter-artistic reading of Guita Jr.’s poetry and Lara Sousa’s film.
