The objective of this article is to analyze the relationship established between young and older people in the novel Os transparentes, by Ondjaki. Taking into account the importance of the representation of children in Angolan literature, as well as the relationship established between characters that are children and older ones as a symbol of possible futures, the article seeks to explore the possible impacts of connections with reference older people for the outcome of each young person in the narrative. It is argued that the impact of pessimism regarding the present and future is present both in the death of two young characters, and in the almost total absence of children in the narrative. It is considered, however, that the survival of two other young people and their transition from a listening position to leadership in the defense of the elderly carries with it seeds of hope regarding the future.
