O artigo discute como a ficção de J. M. Coetzee constrói seus textos a partir da
intertextualidade, por ele escolhida como procedimento eficaz. Revendo o conceito de
intertextualidade e ligando-o à metáfora-conceito da literatura como passagem, mostra que
uma das principais e mais recentes obras de Coetzee, Diário de um ano ruim, dela se vale
para examinar questões candentes da chamada globalização e suas consequências, de um
ponto de vista político e cultural. Desta forma, o artigo busca compreender como Coetzee
repensa a literatura como representação e, também, como inter-relação do ser humano com
a solidão, a fragmentação e o desassossego tão característicos de nossa era.
