Based on Usage-Based Functional Linguistics, the present work aims to describe the main morphosyntactic and semantic-pragmatic properties of constructions em vez de and ao invés de, in contemporary Brazilian Portuguese. An analysis of both constructions allows one to conclude that these connectors convey the value of substitution, not just opposition, as traditional approaches try to defend.
