The processing of modal sentences in Brazilian Portuguese: evidence from self-monitored reading

This paper describes a self-paced reading experiment applied to adults, which aimed to verify the reaction time (RT) and the effect of context to sentences containing the modal verbs ‘deve’ and ‘tem que’, against stereotypical and non-stereotypical backgrounds (KRATZER, 1981, 1991, 2012). The RT for ‘deve’ sentences was average 442ms higher than the RT for ‘tem que’ sentences; and the RT for the critical segment ‘deve’ in non-stereotypical contexts was 495ms higher average. The results confirm previous off-line experiments and bring language processing evidence for the intuitively captured variety of meanings associated to ‘deve’.
