This article analyzes the pronunciation of pre-stressed mid vowels /e/ and /o/ in the speech of Sergipanos living in São Paulo. The main goal was to verify if the social networks formed by these migrants (open – with frequent contact with Paulistanos; closed – with more contact with other migrants from Northeastern Brazil) correlate with their pronunciation of these vowels. The dependent variable was treated as numeric (measures of F1). Results suggest that the accomodation hypothesis cannot be confirmed: migrants of the more open network do not accommodate more to the São Paulo pattern than those of the more closed network.
