The present study aims to verify the influence of linguistic and extralinguistic variables on the phonological awareness ability in children with phonological disorder. The sample composition of this study was made from the results of speech-language evaluations that integrate a database (REC 995.344). The sample included linguistic data from the speech assessments of all children who underwent the Self-Awareness of Speech Disorder test and the Phonological Awareness test from the Sequential Evaluation Instrument - CONFIAS, as well as extralinguistic data such as gender, age, schooling and writing hypothesis. For the analysis of this data we used Fisher's Exact Test and the Mann-Whitney Test, both from the SPSS version 16.0 statistical program. The results indicate that the linguistic variables, such as the performance on the Self-Awareness of Speech Disorder test, and the extralinguistic variables analyzed in the study do not directly influence the phonological awareness abilities of the children, but that there is an influence of schooling for this metalinguistic ability and with it a strong impact on the phonemic level. With the present study it can be concluded that children with phonological disorder would benefit from activities on explicit knowledge about the sounds from their language, thus improving one of the aspects of phonological processing, which is phonological awareness.
