The present study is dedicated to the analysis of the semantic structure and polysemy of the possessive genitive in Portuguese. Considering analyzes of possessive genitive in terms of conceptual metaphor (NIKIFORIDOU, 1991; LANGACKER, 1991) and structural mereology (LYONS, 1980), we consider the problem of the insufficiency of such arguments for the description of possession polysemy. As a theoretical and descriptive alternative, it is postulated that the constructions of genitive are metonymic patterns associated with contiguity domains (PEIRSMAN & GEERAERTS, 2006), either via transformation between image schemas of contiguous experiences, or through metaphorical mapping between contiguity domains.
