This paper deals with the study of the social evaluation of variation based on results of studies (production and perception) of a sociolinguistic variable with socially marginalized adolescents. The approach taken differs from the theoretical position assumed by the wave model (ECKERT, 2012), which establishes a split view of theoretical approaches and methodologies used over time in sociolinguistic studies. It is assumed that understanding the behavior of individuals who are on the fringes of the social structure requires also to observe the place these individuals occupy in the social hierarchy and to what formative possibilities they have access.
