The aim of this paper is to contribute to studies about the expression of Theticity (SASSE, 1987, 2006; LAMBRECHT, 2000) in Brazilian Portuguese, by analyzing the syntax of this informational configuration. The goal is to discuss if theticity in this language is a functional category represented in cognition as, e.g. in Bybee (2010, 2013) or if it is a pragmatic condition interpreted in discourse. The results of a corpus analysis showed: (a): a variety of syntactic configurations not compatible with the idea of a functional category represented in cognition and (b): the presence of a kind of marker having presumably some function related to theticity at discourse level.
