Theoretical-experimental remarks on the underlying structure of sluicing with preposition deletion

Abstract

Results of two acceptability judgment tasks on preposition deletion (P-deletion) in Brazilian Portuguese are presented. The first experiment contrasts P-deletion under sluicing (Merchant (2001) with P-deletion under interrogatives double-filled CPs. In the second experiment, acceptability of P-deletion in relative clauses and in sluicing is considered. The goals are: (i) to verify whether P-deletion is restricted to contexts of sluicing or a general phenomenon of interrogative double filled CPs, (ii) to analyze the structure underlying sluiced CPs. The results suggest that P-deletion happens in sluiced CPs and in relative clauses, being, thus, compatible with clefting analyses for P-deleted sluicing (Rodrigues et al., 2009), raising, therefore, questions about the status of the syntactic identity constraint.

Cilene Rodrigues, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio)

Possui graduação em Letras pela Universidade de Brasília (1995), mestrado em Linguística pela Universidade de Brasília (1998) e doutorado em Linguística/Teoria Formal da Gramática pela University of Maryland (2004). É professora e pesquisadora da PUC-Rio (LAPAL - Laboratório de Aquisição e Processamento da Linguagem e INCog - Grupo de Pesquisa Interdisciplinar em Neurociências e Cognição). Em cognição tem interesse em gramática em desordens mentais e questões de especificidade de domínio. Em teoria linguística, tem interesse em sintaxe experimental e em sintaxe comparada, especialmente em recursividade, dependência sintaxe-semântica, a nano-sintaxe e a interpretabilidade dos pronomes nas interfaces da gramática. Em linguística evolutiva, tem interesse no uso de métodos teóricos-analíticos vindos da linguística formal em investigações sobre comunicação animal.

Ludmila Milhorance, Força Aérea Brasileira (FAB) / Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio)

Mestre em Estudos da Linguagem pela PUC-Rio, em 2014, possui graduação em Letras (Português/Inglês e Literaturas correspondentes) pela mesma instituição (2011). Atualmente é doutoranda em Estudos da Linguagem pela PUC-Rio e é membro do Laboratório de Psicolinguística e Aquisição da Linguagem (LAPAL). A pesquisa foca as questões de processamento envolvidas nos fenômenos elípticos, considerando os aspectos psicolinguísticos desse tipo de construção.
