The purpose of this paper is to present methodological aspects considered in a research project conducted with bimodal bilingual participants, that is, people who use two languages in different modalities (a sign language, in the visual-spatial modality; and a spoken language, in the oral-auditory modality). The paper presents the experimental methodologies used in this project, including the instruments, the data collection procedure, the coding of the results, and additional aspects that must be considered before proceeding with the analyses. This project references results from previous research conducted with bimodal bilinguals over the last 10 years (such the ones reported by LILLO-MARTIN 2010; 2016; 2020; QUADROS 2015; 2016; QUADROS, 2017). The main goal of the paper is to share the process for developing methodological tools to be used with bimodal bilinguals. We consider this to be very important for the sake of future studies conducted with similar kinds of populations, which are of interest for theoretical reasons as well as for applied studies. Theoretically, such studies may contribute to theoretical issues related to bilingualism, especially given that new findings related to this specific bilingual population have been made. On the applied side, future research will be beneficial for enhancing bilingualism in professionals who work as sign language teachers, in bilingual education settings, and as sign language translators and interpreters.
