From pages to screen: a multi-dimensional approach to the adaptation of young adult novels to the silver screen

Abstract

Movies such as The outsiders (1983), The basketball diaries (1995) and Harry Potter and the sorcerer's stone (2001) are examples of the growing number of adaptations of novels often categorized as young adult. Such novels are intended for an audience composed of individuals in their late teens. The purpose of our study is to understand how the language in young adult books is adapted to the audiovisual language of movies. To that end, we collected the Young Adult Corpus (YAC), which includes 30 novels belonging to the young adult category and 30 subtitles of their respective movies. The YAC corpus was submitted to an additive multi-dimensional analysis based on the dimensions of variation in English (Biber, 1988). Results suggest that when the language of novels is adapted to that of the silver screen it becomes more interactive, less narrative and more situation dependent.

Doutora em Linguística Aplicada e Estudos da Linguagem pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (2013) e professora Adjunta, nível II, da UNIFESP. Atuou como professora formadora do curso de inglês para alunos de licenciatura da UNIVESP. Pesquisadora do Grupo de Pesquisa em Linguística de Corpus (GELC) e do Grupo investigações Formais em Línguagem e Aquisição (InfoLinc). Tem experiência na área de Letras, com ênfase em Línguas Estrangeiras Modernas, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Linguística de Corpus, análise de variação de registro e aquisição de linguagem.
