NPs contribute to the construction of reference and to the identification of the main subject in the text. They also mark the formal usage of written language. Thirty Abstracts produced by Brazilian graduate students in Languages and Medicine were analyzed. The criteria of complexity included the number of lexical items, the types of embedding, the informational status and the preferred order in the clause. Their frequency was compared. The analysis showed that, in this genre, Complex Noun Phrases prevail and can be used on both sides of the verb, thus contributing to the genre´s formality and difficulty of production/comprehension.
