This paper presents an investigation on the graphic polymorphism in the representation of sibilants on letters written by Portuguese authors in the XX century. The data analyzed consists on spelling deviations in the representation of the alveolars fricatives [s z] and their postalveolars variants [ʃ ʒ]. The text brings an analysis methodology for the phenomenon as a parameter to diagnose the author’s writing skills level. Historical Sociolinguistics was chosen to guide the research (ROMAINE, 1982; CONDE SILVESTRE, 2007; BERGS, 2012). The results of orthographic irregularities analysis point to the relation between letters and sounds, and indicate the authors’ writing knowledge levels.Downloads
