This paper presents the results of the philological analysis of requests for mercê (favor) made by Lázaro Coelho de Sá, an indigenous man from the village of Urucu, in Pernambuco. The claimant, who already held the position of Captain, aspired to the position of Governor General of the Indians of all missions. The corpus is mostly composed of petitions and certificates written between 1728 and 1756, which attest to the loyalty and hard work of Lázaro Coelho and his father, Manoel Cubas Frazão, Captain of his village and ex-combatant in the wars of restoration. The selected documents belong to the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino and are situated in the context of the Palmarist conflicts. The complexity of the set of documents related to the circuit of mercês provides a dialogue between Philology and different areas, such as Diplomatics, Paleography and History, in order to characterize the documentary species in question and situate them in time and space, thus also broadening the mapping of writing practices on the Brazil-Portugal route during the colonial period.
