This article presents the results of a preliminary study on the metaphorical conceptualization of women in letters sent to the Holy Office, in different years of the 18th century. To carry out the study, we used the theoretical contribution of Cognitive Semantics, from a Socio-Historical-Cultural perspective (ALMEIDA; SANTANA, 2019; ALMEIDA, 2020) and also the Theory of Conceptual Metaphor (LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 2002 [1980]; KÖVECSES, 2017). With regard to its methodological design, the investigative work carried out was based on a qualitative approach to scientific work, of an exploratory, documentary, descriptive and interpretive nature of the corpus, which was made up of letters included in the Post Scriptum Project, coordinated by Rita Marquilhas (2014). After carrying out this preliminary study, it is already known that, in the period in question and, particularly, in the analyzed corpus, the woman could be conceptualized in terms of DEVIL and SAINT, among other possibilities.
