Ketu nation, which is considered a variety of Yoruba, in its relation to writing and non-verbal language. To this end, we use as the corpus of analysis the lyrics of the songs originating from the Sassain ritual; however, in this study, we analyze only some lexical items to highlight the social and cultural aspects of this linguistic production in its real use, which accompanies the use of writing and non-verbal language as a marker of Africanized identity. With the theoretical foundation of Sociolinguistics and data collection based on ethnography, we explain the linguistic phenomena through social relations, mainly those related to maintenance and resistance, in this religious space that has endured since the colonial period in Brazil as an African heritage that suffered all kinds of cultural suppression and prejudices but still seeks the creation of a symbolic Africa (Evaristo, 2012), adapting to maintain its culture and resisting until today, mainly supported by African-based religions, which preserve these ancestral practices through language, cuisine, beliefs, and attire.
