This work focuses on the use of quotation marks in Brazilian Portuguese news headlines, drawing on Cognitive Linguistics and, more specifically, Mental Spaces Theory (FAUCONNIER, 1994, 1997; FAUCONNIER; TURNER, 2002). Based on the discourse primitive of Viewpoint (CUTRER, 1994; DANCYGIER; SWEETSER, 2012), a unified explanation for the phenomenon is proposed, arguing that the use of quotation marks indicates Viewpoint shift in the mental spaces network established as discourse unfolds. In particular, the analysis shows that the use of quotation marks to indicate Viewpoint shift can occur in two main contexts: (i) from the Base/Ground space to a reported speech space (direct speech and partial direct speech); (ii) from the Base/Ground space to a more implicit Metalinguistic space in the Basic Communicative Spaces Network (BCSN), in the case of metaphorical and/or metonymic processes.
