Supported by the Usage-Based Linguistcs approach, in a qualitative-quantitative study, we observed the path of linguistic change from the combination chega aí to its constitution as a new symbolic unit with an inviting function in the variant of Brazilian Portuguese. Based on Traugott and Trousdale (2021 [2013]), Bybee (2016 [2010]), Rosário e Oliveira (2016) and Teixeira (2015), among other references, we observe the constructionalization trajectory of chega aí as a new discourse marker, coded as [chega aí]MD. Throughout the process of change, the verbal (chega) and locative (aí) parts are recruited for contiguous use in different communicative situations in which they undergo neoanalysis in microsteps which result in greater linkage between terms, in addition, the constructionalization of [chega aí]MD is also motivated by the analogical relationship with the constructional pattern [VLoc]MD. The results of the investigation confirm different contexts of use of the combination that chega aí in the current synchrony and confirm its recent constructionalization and paradigmatization in the category of discourse markers.
