Since the recognition of the linguistic status of sign languages, several studies have reaffirmed that spatial-visual languages are natural languages, just like oral-auditory languages. Given the need to expand and enrich systematic knowledge about SL, onomatopoeia stands out: a figure of speech known in oral languages for being based on sounds, constituting a fruitful field of study of great relevance for the expansion and consolidation of the specificities of SL. There are few studies dedicated exclusively to verifying the figure of speech in Libras – onomatopoeia, which, according to the concept extracted from oral languages, is a figure in which a word or set of words represents a noise or sound. Qualitative methodology with an exploratory objective and documentary procedure are used. ELAN and Microsoft Paint software are used as resources. This study presents three stages: conceptual theoretical study; collection of productions in Libras composing the corpus; video analysis. Due to the need to fill gaps left by studies already carried out on SL, similarities and differences are sought between the theoretical and practical aspects of onomatopoeia in Libras and LP. The main objective is to verify the use of onomatopoeia in Libras, with specific objectives being to draw theoretical similarities based on studies already carried out on the subject and to look for similarities in the occurrence of this resource in Libras and LP, focusing on situations of language use. Finally, an objective that permeates all others is to contribute significantly to Libras studies, honoring and respecting its specificities.
